How I Built a Business That Pays Me to Travel With My Family

Ten years ago, I couldn’t have imagined this life.

Josh-Angie-Fulfer.Today, I write this from a quiet Airbnb with my wife next to me, my kids just outside, and a full inbox of new leads and client wins rolling in.

No emergencies. No boss calling. Just a growing business… and the freedom to enjoy it.

This didn’t happen by accident.
I built a business that pays me to travel—not by chasing “passive income,” but by creating real value, building systems, and refusing to settle for the old way of doing things.

I Grew Up With Nothing—But I Paid Attention

I grew up poor in Milwaukee. I didn’t come from money. I didn’t have business mentors. I didn’t even know what success looked like until I started caddying at a local golf course / country club.

That job changed my life.

I watched these business owners move differently. They weren’t rushing. They weren’t stressed. They had freedom. They showed up to play, shake hands, and enjoy their day—while their businesses ran in the background.

And I thought: “Whatever that is—I want it.”

Remote Marketing team for Concrete Lifting CompaniesFrom a Cubicle to Control

I followed the traditional path for a while—college, corporate job, steady paycheck. But deep down, I knew it wasn’t right. I’d be sitting at a desk, thinking about the life I wanted… and realizing I wasn’t living it.

When our daughter was just six months old, I made the decision.
I didn’t want her to grow up watching me come home late, burned out, with nothing left in the tank.
I wanted her to grow up seeing what freedom looked like—what it meant to own your time, your energy, your life.

So I left corporate. No fallback plan. No perfect timing. Just a clear decision:
I’m going to build something that works for me and my family.

And I’ve never looked back.

I Didn’t Build a Job—I Built a Brand

I started my own agency helping small businesses, like waterproofers & concrete flatwork guys, with marketing, and eventually locked in on the concrete lifting niche. Why? Because I had a concrete issue at my own house, found out about the service, and instantly saw the market opportunity. And because I saw the value in what concrete lifting offered – versus the alternative.

But I didn’t stop at “getting clients.” I built my own assets. I built systems. I created processes. I found amazing team members. I got results so good people kept referring others.

And I stayed in my lane.

That’s the secret nobody wants to hear:
You don’t need to do everything—you just need to do your thing really, really well.

When we travel, the kids take pictures of trip hazards 😎 They love it, and they’re learning – and getting more content for our clients. Win win win…

I Work With My Wife. My Kids Help in the Business.

Eventually Angie, my wife, retired from teaching and joined the business full-time.

Now we work side by side, and our kids help too—not with busywork, but with purpose.

We teach them how things run.
How to take ownership.
How to create value.
How to think for themselves.

It’s not about them helping me. It’s about me helping them learn how to build the life they want—while we enjoy more time together right now.

The Business Runs While We Travel

Because of what we’ve built, we travel a lot.

I can take my family anywhere. Work from anywhere. And often, I don’t need to “work” at all while we’re gone.

  • New leads still come in.
  • Projects move forward.
  • Clients stay happy.
  • Revenue doesn’t stop.

Why? Because I built a business that runs off reputation, referrals, and rock-solid marketing.

Not luck. Not hype. Not hustle culture.

So, How Did I Build It?

Here’s the short version:

  • I focused on solving real problems for people I care about
  • I stayed consistent and showed up when others quit
  • I built systems instead of creating chaos
  • I invested in relationships—not just transactions
  • I built a team and take care of them
  • I kept learning (still do, every day)
  • I prioritized family, health, and happiness over “hustle”
  • I stopped trading time for money—and started building value

And I’m still building.

Final Thoughts

Look—I’m not here to flex. I’m here to show you what’s possible.

You don’t need to be born rich.
You don’t need investors.
You don’t need to be a genius.

You just need a clear mission, a little grit, and a willingness to learn and lead.

Build the business that pays you back.
With time. With memories. With freedom.
Because if it only pays you money—but costs you your life—what’s the point?
